Turtle shell reflections,
another world story
An exhibition co-produced by the Museum
of Decorative Arts of the Indian Ocean and Kelonia
This exhibition examines the recurring mythological themes through a selection of objects from every continent. The turtle can be found in almost all civilizations where it has played an important role in cosmogony. It remains important in Western civilisation, as evidenced by the first objects of turtle shell crafted in workshops in Indo-Portuguese India. This translucent material, used to decorate boxes for religious relics, and in the hermetic tradition where the turtle (associated with wings) was a symbolic illustration of earth and sky, often seen in Renaissance manuscripts. Does not the bond with the sacred that is attributed to ancient cultures remains relevant to the relationship between humankind and Nature and our place within it? Contemporary awareness of the need for sustainable development unites this harmonious condition and this exhibition aims to highlight the features of an environmentally friendly way of thinking by offering the visitor a journey through time and space, embodied in finely crafted objects.

What do green turtles feed ?
from algae to seagrass
The Soutwestern Indian Ocean hosts world important nesting and feeding areas for green turtle populations. Green turtle is the only sea turtle that feeds primarily on shallow coastal seagrass and algae meadows. With technological advances in recent years and an important regional cooperation, scientific programs provide new knowledge on spatial and foraging ecology of green turtles of La Reunion and Mayotte. First results show how the species adapts to trophic conditions and provide tools for green turtle populations’ conservation and management in these two French countries.

Between waves and seashore
Ka.Ty Deslandes is an artist, who shows several of her paintings realised during many trips through the Pacific and Indian Ocean. These places are sources of inspiration, where she finds the material for her painting (coral, wood, sand, coconuts, pieces of sheet iron, cords, hessian). This exposition aims at increasing public awareness on art and environmental issues. It is also the opportunity to arouse thoughts on the beauty of the landscape that surrounds us, and the need to create and consume in a sustainable manner in order to preserve.
Several activities will be proposed to the public around this exhibition:
Broadcast of two movies, one on the artist's universe: “Mtsanga Baharini”, Mayotte, realised by Serge Prouteau, and the other on Europa marine turtles, “The mysterious mangal” realised by the multimedia centre of the University of Reunion.
Wednesday 9th April from 2.30 pm to 4pm
A guided tour for kids (limited to 15 kids with parental supervision).
Wednesday 16th April from 6.30pm
